How do you identify Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

Children's progress and attainment are closely monitored and tracked by class teachers, SENCo and Head Teacher. If it is felt that a child is not making progress in a particular curriculum area or are having difficulties in other areas, for example socially, emotionally, handwriting, motor skills etc a discussion will be held with the SENCo and parents to look at what support/intervention could be offered in school and how parents might support the child at home.

As a parent you know your child best, so if you do have any concerns about their development do not hesitate to discuss this with the class teacher.

How will you support my child with their special educational needs and disability?

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

Your child will be supported throughout their time in Neville's Cross Primary School through Quality First Teaching. Additional support will be offered if it is felt necessary.

 

How will you make sure my child's education meet their needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's young person's needs?

The curriculum is differentiated to meet all children's needs, regardless of ability. All of our staff have high expectations for all children.

How will we know my child is progressing?

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

We hold parent's evenings twice per year. If you, or the teacher has concerns you may meet more regularly to review progress and support.

Support may be outlined more formally through a 'SEN Support Plan'. These are reviewed termly and parental input is a fundamental part of this document.

 

How will you support my child's overall wellbeing?

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall wellbeing?

As a school we pride ourselves upon the range of interventions we offer, supporting not only the academic progress, but also the social and emotional wellbeing of all of our children. We offer programmes such as 'Zippy's Friends', 'Time to Talk', and 'Talkabout' which supports and develops these areas.

What specialist services and expertise is available at or accessed by the staff?

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

We are able to access a range of services such as Speech and Language Therapy, Child and Adolesecent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), Educational Psychology Services plus many others.

 

How are staff trained regarding SEND?

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEND have had or are having?

School staff receive training regarding effective strategies that could be used to support children with special educational needs. Many staff have also attended more specific training. Please see the school website for more information.

 

What activities outside the classroom will there be?

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

No child will be excluded from any activity because of a special educational need. Additional support may be required to enable them to fully participate and be safe outside of the classroom. Any trips will be discussed with parents and their views will be taken into consideration.

How will you support my child's needs?

How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

Access arrangements are in place with ramps and disabled toilet facilities within the school building. Our Acessibility Plan is reviewed annually. If a child is identified as needing specialist equipment, this will be considered.

My child is going to be starting or leaving soon, how will you help them?

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

We have excellent links with other primary and our 'feeder' secondary schools.

Transition sessions are built into the Summer Term for all children moving into new classes.

Our new Reception intake will visit their new school prior to beginning in September. Parents attend a 'New Starter evening' to receive information and meet their child's teachers. Early Years staff will endeavour to visit new children in their nursery setting.

 

What is available to help my child with their education?

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

Quality First teaching is given to all children. Additional resources will be offered if it is felt a child is not making progress or is displaying needs in other areas. Support may be offered through small group support, interventions outside of the classrooom or at other times of the day.

There are some cases where we are able to access additional 'top up' funding for children with complex and significant difficulties.

 

What support can I expect for my child?

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

Teachers, parents and children are all involved in deciding how much support is provided and how effective that support is.

We encourage you to be involved throughout the time your child is part of the Neville's Cross family. Meetings can be arranged to see your child's class teacher alongside the regular parent's evenings we hold.

The school holds lots of other events, to which you will be invited and encouraged to attend, for example class assemblies, school fairs, book fairs etc.
