Durham Portage Service

We are a home visiting educational service for pre-school children who have developmental or learning difficulties or a physical disability with additional support needs.

We work with parents/carers to help their children learn new skills, usually offering weekly home visits by trained Portage Visitors. We also offer Portage groups where children have the opportunity to socialise and play together. Portage groups also provide an opportunity for parents to meet and gain mutual support from one another.

Local Offer

Local Offer description

The Durham Portage Service is for families living in County Durham who have a pre-school child with developmental or learning difficulties or a physical disability who have additional support needs. We work with children from birth to three years of age.  Following referral we will undertake an intial visit to your home. We will talk to you about the service we can offer and together we will decide if you and your child would benefit from the service.

We acknowledge that you know your child best and Portage builds on this knowledge.  We start by finding out what your child can do and then work with you so that your child learns new skills in small steps through play. We usually arrange weekly visits to your home and we also offer Portage groups. We work with you to track your child's progress and use this knowledge to help to support your child's transition into pre-school.

We can also help parents/carers to access the support and services available to them and their family.
