Durham Portage Service

We are a home visiting early learning support service for pre-school children who have complex developmental needs and their families.

We work in partnership with parents and carers at the earliest stages of recognising their child’s additional needs and through parent-led, family focussed involvement, support their child’s development through the delivery of structured activities and child-led play.

We offer weekly or sometimes fortnightly home visits by trained Portage Visitors.

We also offer Portage groups where children have the opportunity to play and learn with their peers within a small group  in a highly supportive environment.

Parents can meet and enjoy the mutual support that is an inherent part of Portage groups.

Local Offer

Local Offer description

The Durham Portage Service is for families living in County Durham who have a child between 0-3 years with complex developmental needs. Following referral we will undertake an intial visit to your home. We will talk to you about the service we can offer and together we will decide if you and your child would benefit from the service.

We acknowledge that you know your child best and Portage builds on this knowledge.  We start by finding out what your child can do and then work with you so that your child learns new skills in small steps through play. We usually arrange weekly or sometimes fortnightly visits to your home and we also offer Portage groups. We work with you to track your child's progress and use this knowledge to help to support your child's transition into pre-school.

We can also advise parents/carers of the support and services that might be available to them and their family.
