Weardale Museum at High House Chapel

Our Museum recreates a typical Weardale cottage of about 1870, telling the story of lead-miners and their families. The adjoining Methodist Chapel, built in 1760, is the oldest purpose built chapel in continuous weekly use since its foundation.

We offer a comprehensive family history resource about ancestors from Stanhope and Wolsingham parishes.

Our resources are particularly attractive to the over 50s and for organised community groups a talk is provided at no extra cost.

We open at Easter and other Bank Holidays and then:

  • 1 May - 30 October, Wednesday until Sunday.
  • July - August every afternoon 1.30 - 4.30pm.

We will open at any time for organised groups so if you think you have a group who would enjoy the trip, get in touch!

Local Offer

Local Offer description

The Museum is a four roomed cottage with access to the two upstairs rooms only via a flight of 14 stairs.

Access for wheelchair users to the two downstairs rooms is through a door on the street side and not the main entrance. Furniture can be moved about inside the house to assist movement but users must be aware that this is a small cottage.

Wheelchair access to the downstairs area of the chapel is available. There is a disabled access toilet on site.

Staff will do all they can to assist those with SEND capabilities and it is helpful if we know beforehand.
