How do you identify Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

The needs of all children are assessed on entry into school, be it in reception or any other class.  Staff liaise closely with pre-school settings in order to have plans in place to meet individual needs.  When transferring at any other point in school, information is sought to enable a smooth transition.

Throughout school children are continually assessed, both formally and informally, in order to ensure they are making progress.  There is regular communicate with parents/carers and any concerns, no matter how small, are discussed as soon as they arise.

There is an open door policy, including contact with class teachers directly via email, which enables parents/carers to alert school to any concerns that they may have.

Parents/carers are fully involved in any decisions made about a child’s special needs; provision made for them and any referrals to other services.

How will you support my child with their special educational needs and disability?

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

Once a child’s needs are identified, a plan is put into place to provide appropriate support.  This might be small group support with a teaching assistant, specialist support from an outside agency or 1-1 support within school.  Progress is monitored closely to assess the effectiveness of any interventions.  Parents/carers are fully involved in any decisions made.

How will you make sure my child's education meet their needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's young person's needs?

Whilst the school recognise that a child may need a greater focus on particular areas of the curriculum in order to ‘close the gap’ between themselves and their peers, the school also recognise the importance of allowing them to have a wide range of curriculum opportunities, enabling them to experience success.  Each child’s curriculum is carefully matched to their individual needs and (through on going assessment) is monitored closely in order to ensure that progress is made in all areas.

How will we know my child is progressing?

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

The school know how all children are progressing through ongoing, formal and informal assessments.  This information is shared with parents/carers regularly, in a variety of ways, including written reports, review meetings, parent evenings, informal chats and emails.  Staff provide advice and guidance as to how parents/carers can support learning at home through letters, curriculum evenings in school and on a 1-1 basis (for children with specific needs).

How will you support my child's overall wellbeing?

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall wellbeing?

The school firmly believes that children need to be happy and feel secure in order to learn and make progress.

The school’s ethos focusses on caring and supporting each other and encourages all children to respect each person as an individual and recognise the strengths in everyone.  Older children are encouraged to care for younger members of the school family.  This is most noticeable in our ‘Family Groups’ which comprise of children from all classes.  Although children enjoy working in these groups, it is the support that they receive from each other and feeling of belonging, that is the reason that they are so popular and successful in school.

Children are trained to be ‘Buddies’ and ‘Mini Buds’ and they ensure everyone is happy at playtimes and lunchtimes.

Class teachers and all adults in school work to develop positive relationships with all children.  Those with significant special educational needs may have additional support from a teaching assistant who understands and knows them well.

The most recent training has been about children with down syndrome and the next training will be about autism spectrum conditions.

Individual staff are trained in delivering movement programmes, autism spectrum conditions, speech and language, team teach, P.E. for children with special needs, SENCo training with the University of Wolverhampton.

Ofsted (March 2013) recognised the “high quality support (children with SEND) receive from skilled teaching assistants to ensure that their specific needs are met.”

What activities outside the classroom will there be?

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

The school is fully committed to enhancing the children’s experience of school through a wide range of extra curricular activities and trips and believe this is fundamental to the learning process.

All children throughout the school have the same opportunities to participate in the extra curricular activities offered.  When necessary a staff member has supported a child to allow this participation.

School trips are carefully planned to ensure that all children are able to fully participate and benefit from the learning opportunities.  Plans are put in place to support individual children, including 1-1 support where necessary.

How will you support my child's needs?

How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

Whilst the school are restricted by the layout of some aspects of the building, they are committed to ensuring that everyone can access classrooms and key parts of the school.

Adaptations have been made to accommodate children with specific needs.  Accessible toilets are available in all parts of the school.

What is available to help my child with their education?

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

A child with an Education, Health Care Plan will have a costed provision map which outlines how resources are deployed to meet their needs.  For these children the school uses its national SEND funding, which may be topped up by the Local Authority.

The needs of other children are outlined in their individual provision map which feed into a whole school map, identifying how resources are used, especially the support received from teaching assistants.

What support can I expect for my child?

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

Decisions about the support that an individual child receives are made in consultation with parents/carers and any professionals involved.  Whilst there are always financial considerations, every attempt will be made to ensure children receive the support necessary to make progress and thrive.

How will I be involved in my child's education?

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

All parents are actively encouraged to be involved with their child’s education.  A variety of opportunities are offered such as open afternoons, parent meetings, curriculum information sessions etc.

Parent support is welcome in school through accompanying school trips, helping in class and taking part in the PTFA (organising social events to raise funds for the school).

My child is going to be starting or leaving soon, how will you help them?

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

The vast majority of our children transfer to Sedgefield Community College at the age of 11.  Collaboratively they employ a transition worker whose sole purpose is to support year 6 pupils in the summer term and then in the autumn term as they join year 7.  A meeting is held to discuss the specific transition needs of children with additional difficulties.  A personalised transition programme is devised for them.
