Durham Deafened Support

We offer one-to-one family and group support to people across Durham and Darlington who have acquired hearing loss.

We promote the relief, integration, rehabilitation, welfare and education of people who have become isolated because of hearing loss. We enable them to cope with their disability through advocacy, support, education, information and other ways of helping them to understand and meet their communication needs.

Our centre has equipment for people to try, information and advice on relevant issues to do with hearing loss and tinnitus.

Dealing with deafness: We hold none-residential, rehabilitation weeks three times per year.  These are aimed at people who are new to hearing loss and their relative other/friends or family as hearing loss not only affects the deaf person but also their families.  All venues have the loop system. OHP, white board and Power Point are used at meetings to provide visual support. At larger meetings Speech to Text facilities are used.

We offer valuable experience in training in deaf/deafblind awareness and communication skills. Training in communication skills can be arranged if required.

"Pop ins" are held around the villages in County Durham with information on benefits, equipment and coping with hearing loss, also equipment can be seen and tried.  People who are deafened but have not yet got the confidence to attend a support group can be visited at home for one to one and family support.

Appointments needed for one-to-one support.
