Sunderland College is a world class provider of education, with four campuses located across the city. We offer one of the region’s largest range of school leaver, adult and higher education courses as well as courses for international students.

Local Offer description

We welcome learners who have a disability and/or learning difficulty and will ensure, in line with our commitment to the Equality Duty under the Equality Act 2010 and the (Special Educational Needs) Code of Practice 2014, that there is suitable access and appropriate and adequate support for individual students where necessary.

Many students need additional help so they can succeed in their chosen courses of study.

In many cases under the new Code of Practice, recommendations for support strategies will be outlined in individual (0-25 years) Education and Health Care Plans (EHCPs). We work in partnership with relevant agencies (for example councils) and are proud to fulfil its statutory duties to make extra provision for those individuals with more complex learning needs and disabilities.

The college Learning Support Service

Under the co-ordination of the college learning support service a range of specialist support is also available for students with more complex support needs including those with:

  • Learning Difficulties and/or Disabilities
  • Physical difficulties and/or mobility problems
  • Medical conditions
  • Sensory Impairments (vision/hearing loss)
  • Specific Learning Difficulties (e.g. Dyslexia, Mental Health, Autism Spectrum, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties

The learning support service will continue to collate information on disability and/learning difficulty via EHCPs or from individual learner declarations and distribute relevant information accordingly and within an appropriate timescale for adjustments to be made.

All full-time and part-time students are entitled to (additional) learning support and there is a wide range of specialist support available including:

    ·        Access arrangements for exams

     ·         Learning Mentor support

     ·         Personal Care  

     ·         Teaching materials in alternative formats (e.g. Braille; large print; audio; coloured overlays; specialist software

Sunderland College provides a wide range of academic and vocational courses for school leavers and adults ranging from Foundation Learning, BTEC to A Level’s. The college offers a range of Higher education qualifications, some in partnership with Universities of Sunderland and Teesside.

How can I start using the service?

How can I start using the service?

If you would like your child to attend Sunderland College, you should discuss this with their current school or alternatively you may contact your local authority SEN department or Connexions team. They will then advise you on what steps should be taken.

Parents and carers are always welcome to visit Sunderland College before making a decision about a placement. Once a placement is agreed, we will work with you to support your child in this transition period.

How do you communicate with service users and how are they involved in decision making / planning?

The partnership between parents/ carers and college is crucial to provide your child with a personalised curriculum that best meets their specific needs. Following admission there are many opportunities for us to continue working together, sharing information and answering questions you may have. Formal and informal contact is actively encouraged. In addition to the use of home to college diaries (if applicable to the needs of the learner) and phone calls, listed below are some of the many ways in which you can be involved:

Attending annual review meetings/multi disciplinary team meetings/appointments when appropriate

Attend parents evening to learn more about the progress of your child.

Completing surveys and questionnaires as to gain your views in order to improve our offer to your child.

All campuses have car parking spaces for disabled students and main college campuses have lift access to upper floor areas. We have disabled toilets at all campuses and changing facilities at our Bede Campus. You can discuss your access and support needs with any member of the Learning Support Team who can advise on the most appropriate arrangements for you.
