Walworth School

Welcome to Walworth Primary School, which we believe, is a very special school for all the pupils that attend, where daily experiences and activities are meaningful and memorable and are designed to meet the needs of the individual child. Your child starting any new school can be worrying time for any parent / carer, but I hope that by reading this document you will begin to understand the ethos of our school. I want you to feel happy and confident in the decision you have made and therefore extend an invite to you, and those close to you, to visit our school and residential provision at any time so that you may add to your understanding, and discuss the school and residential offer with us. Our staff are committed to supporting pupils in a manner that is child centred and focussed around their individual needs, interests, knowledge / skills and welfare.  One parent commented ‘I think Walworth is an amazing school. They exceed above and beyond in every aspect.’ (Online Forms Survey July 2022).

Walworth Primary School is a maintained Residential Special School that meets the needs of boys and girls between the ages of 4 – 11 years, who have complex needs often associated with social, emotional and mental health challenges and/or specific learning difficulties and common diagnoses include ADHD, Autism, ODD, OCD and FASD etc. The school delegate the day-to-day running of the School to the appointed Governors and the Senior Leadership Team.  The school has 80 places for either boys or girls and can offer 10 residential boarding places and 5 extended day placement working on a yearly rolling basis (Term Time).   Walworth School is located in Newton Aycliffe in the south of the County. Most children travel to and from the school by taxis provided by Durham Local Authority.

At Walworth School we place positive mental health and wellbeing at the centre of school life. Our vision “Listen, Learn and Be Happy Together” highlights the importance we place on supporting every child’s emotional wellbeing so that they can be listened too and are happy together and ready to learn. We use our knowledge, experience and expertise to help them become the best they can be. We provide a positive sense of self-worth, promote high aspirations and offer endless opportunities to achieve outstanding outcomes.

All children that attend Walworth have an Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP) and have a wide range of difficulties and needs which have prevented effective learning and personal development from taking place in a mainstream school setting. The majority of children entering Walworth School are underachieving academically, and many have failed to establish successful peer and adult relationships in their previous schools. Many of our children have difficulties in their lives beyond school which can ‘marginalise’ preventing them from experiencing wider social interaction. We promote social inclusion aiming to help children achieve their full potential by delivering a 24-hour curriculum, using a combination of professional and therapeutic educare support from external agencies such as psychologists, health care practitioners e.g occupational therapy and CAMHS.  We teach right from wrong, a positive mind-set and the belief and value of a ‘can do’ approach. Our intent is for children to become successful learners, develop independence and become responsible citizens who have the ability to form healthy relationships and contribute to society, through social and moral purpose. We have high expectations and constantly discuss and evaluate whether any child is ready to return to a mainstream educational setting.

We help adults in our school community develop their knowledge and skills to enable them to be reflective practitioners who are able to support, develop & educate our children at an outstanding standard. The school works with the full range of outside agencies across the authority and is committed to ensuring positive working relationships which are focused on how best to meet pupil’s needs and improve outcomes.
