Consett Academy - SEND Local Offer

How do you identify Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

When your child moves from Primary to Consett Academy, the transition staff collect information about your child’s individual needs and academic progress directly from the Primary school.  If your child has been on the SEN register at primary school, then they are automatically put on the SEN register when they start at Consett Academy.

A Special Educational Need can present itself upon transition or at a later time through the Academy, even if it was not been evident before.  The Academy will always contact you to discuss your child's needs and get approval to implement additional support to their curriculum. If this happens, they will be placed on the SEN register

It is important to note that not all pupils referred to the SEND Team will be SEND pupils; any support and guidance given may be short, medium or long term.

How will you support my child with their special educational needs and disability?

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

Consett Academy considers all teachers to be teachers of students with SEND. We will use our best endeavours to ensure that teachers in the Academy are able to identify and provide for those students who have special educational needs which will allow them to be fully included in all the activities of the Academy alongside their peers.  Consett Academy utilises a graduated response for students on an individual basis.

Quality First Teaching

This is:

  • Ensuring that the teacher has the highest possible expectations for your child and all students in their class
  • Ensuring that all teaching is based on building on what your child already knows, can do and understands
  • Using different ways of teaching so that your child is fully involved in learning in class
  • Using specific strategies to support your child to learn.

Small Group intervention

If your child is struggling with the academic, social, emotional of physical aspect of the Academy they will be given the opportunity to access additional small group interventions. These programmes are led by school staff as well as outside agency staff.

Individual 1:1 support

Students who are working significantly below national and age related expectations may benefit from this type of intervention. This is targeted, time limited intervention that can occur at any time throughout the Academy day.

How will we know my child is progressing?

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

Consett Academy has rigorous monitoring system for ALL children.

Students are assessed at regular intervals to see how well they are doing.  If a student is not progressing in line with expectations, then further assessment and, if necessary, intervention is put in place. Students enter the cycle of ‘Assess, Plan, Do and Review’ in regard to having their needs met.

Reports are regularly sent home to parents also access the VLE allows parents to monitor their child’s progress.

How will you support my child's overall wellbeing?

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall wellbeing?

Each year group has the support of an Achievement Leader and Year Manager who oversee the progress and wellbeing of each student in the year group. Information sharing processes ensure that staff are informed of students individual needs or situations so appropriate intervention or support can be put in place.

Consett Academy has an active Peer Support team who provide social and emotional support to students during break and lunch times. There is a vibrant extra curricular offer, which allows students to access structured activities and supports social integration outside of the classroom.

My child is going to be starting or leaving soon, how will you help them?

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

Consett Academy works together with local feeder primary schools to support pupils from year 4, through to arrival in year 7. As an Academy, they provide additional transition support for pupils who they feel would benefit from enhanced transition during the summer term of year 6.

Alongside this, all new students are invited to a four day summer school event in the last week of the summer holidays before year 7 begins. During this students have the opportunity to meet new friends discover their new school, meet key staff and ask all the questions they need about the new school year.

Once year 7 begins, students are invited to a residential team building event in the first half of the autumn term where they have the opportunity to further develop their confidence and relationships.

The Academy values the support and input of parents and carers as much as possible in their child’s transition to Consett Academy. Parents are invited into the Academy on a number of occasions through year 6. This gives parents a further opportunity to look around the Academy, meet staff and discuss any concerns that they may have before their child starts in Year 7.
