How do you identify Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

We tracks pupils academic, social and emotional progress against a range of criteria.  Referrals/extra support is given based upon the findings. Parents are involved in this whole process right from the very beginning.

How will you support my child with their special educational needs and disability?

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

The children are supported by the class teacher, working one to one or in small groups within the classroom or, if needed, they work as part of an intervention group which focuses on their specific needs.

How will you make sure my child's education meet their needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's young person's needs?

The curriculum is matched by careful differentiation/support based upon the needs/interests of the child.

How will we know my child is progressing?

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

Termly meetings are held for all the pupils in the school. The school also hold half termly meetings for pupils where there is concern. Mentoring reports are shared with the parents/careers which contain information about how you can best support your child.

How will you support my child's overall wellbeing?

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall wellbeing?

The heart of the school includes counselling and a broad curriculum which focuses upon the needs/interests of the pupils. When needed the school also works with a range of outside agencies to support the wellbeing of all pupils.

What specialist services and expertise is available at or accessed by the staff?

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

How are staff trained regarding SEND?

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEND have had or are having?

A range of CPD is given to all staff in the school.  We have a trained Counsellor as well as a Pupil Welfare Officer and an experienced SENCO.

What activities outside the classroom will there be?

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

A wide range of extra curricular provision is open to all pupils. All activities are risk assessed to ensure they are safe and appropriate. Where appropriate, adult support is given to any pupils needing it.

How will you support my child's needs?

How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

The school is over two levels; however, a lift connects these.  The school also has ramps from the car park.

What is available to help my child with their education?

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

Provision maps ensure resources are deployed correctly based on the needs of the children.

What support can I expect for my child?

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

Decisions are made in consultation with parents and appropriate agencies and key staff.

How will I be involved in my child's education?

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

Parents can become involved in the school through becoming a friend of the school, a Governor or they can volunteer to help out in classrooms.

My child is going to be starting or leaving soon, how will you help them?

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

Transition arrangements are well planned, which include meetings with key staff, visits for the child prior to starting our school, staff to visit the child in their own setting and if necessary a staggered start.
