We are a large post 16 provider based in the heart of Durham City. We offer a wide range of academic and vocational courses to approximately 1,200 students from across County Durham.

Through the delivery of high quality teaching, we aim to ensure that students meet their potential and progress either onto higher education or employment. 

We pride ourselves on the wider opportunities offered to students and the emphasis placed on information, advice and guidance. Progression routes followed by students range from medicine and law degrees to accountancy and engineering apprenticeships.

We are committed to inclusive practice and the removal of barriers to learning. Where a young person meets the entry requirements for courses, we will not refuse access to opportunities based on whether or not a young person has special educational needs.

How do you identify Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

At Durham Sixth Form Centre, we offer transition support, before enrolment. All applicants have the opportunity to declare if they have a learning need, disability, are considered vulnerable or have a medical condition which may affect their learning.

These opportunities include:

  • application form
  • during one-to-one transition interviews, which parents are also invited to attend
  • open evenings, where specialist staff, including the SENCO are available
  • enrolment 

Collection of this information allows us to liaise with students, their feeder school and parents to ensure the study programme is appropriate, and that any additional support is carefully planned. This may also involve partnership work with external agencies.

We understand that some leaner needs may become apparent only after a student has embarked upon a study programme. Our subject staff will work with specialist staff to identify emergent needs, where it is suspected that a student is having difficulty because they may have special educational needs, disability or be considered vulnerable.

We also recognise that other factors may impact on progress. We make provision for this through our other policies and provision. This may include attendance, finance, EAL, being a looked after child and/or being a child of a servicewoman/man.

We recognise that students with medical conditions should be properly supported to enable them to fully access all parts of the curriculum. These arrangements are detailed in our “Supporting Students with Medical Needs” policy. Any student who has a medical condition can also be disabled and, where this is the case, we comply with our duties under the Equality Act 2010.

How will you support my child with their special educational needs and disability?

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

Support at Durham Sixth Form Centre is primarily aimed at promoting student independence and enabling our students to make successful progression towards employment and/or higher education, independent living, good health and participation in the community.

Special educational support provision might include:

  • Assistive technology – the use of a lap top in class and for examinations
  • access to personal care – we have toilets and facilities for students with disabilities.
  • Specialist tuition – we offer GCSE English and Maths re-sit and access to Durham University mentors.
  • “Note-takers” – for high needs students. (for example in-class support or peer support by copying other students or teachers notes in advance.)
  • Access to therapies (for example access to our counsellor).
  • one-to-one and small group learning support (for example a keyworker or access to the ‘Girls’ Talk’ programme).
  • exam support - testing for, and implementing, any approved access arrangements for examinations (for example extra time, reader or scribe).

We will:

  • discuss with the student and parents the impact and success of the intervention and support
  • consider the student’s progress and any changes to their ambitions and aspirations.
  • plan for any changes to the type and level of support as assessed from the evidence, as the need arises

How will you make sure my child's education meet their needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's young person's needs?

We aim to offer a broad curriculum which meets the needs and ambitions of all of our students. We have a number of different study programmes available to accommodate this.

The majority of our students follow three or four Level 3 courses in Year 12 and maintain three of these courses in Year 13.

In addition to timetabled lessons with subject staff, students are expected to partake in extensive independent learning supported by our e-learning resources.

We are able to offer students flexible, bespoke study programmes within which they can combine A-level, Applied A-level and BTEC Level 3 courses enabling them to follow an individualised programme, most suited to their needs, ability and future outcomes.

Students who have not achieved a grade C in GCSE Maths and English will be required to re-sit this qualification, as part of their personal study programme.

Our final curriculum offer is made at the point of  enrolment and is dependent upon a student meeting the minimum entry requirements (five GCSE grades C or above), as well as the entry requirements of individual subjects.

How will we know my child is progressing?

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

We provide regular updates through termly progress indicator letters and two subject consultation evenings in both Year 12 and Year 13.

Parents and carers can contact a young person’s Leader of Learning by email or telephone to discuss any issues or concerns at any time.

How will you support my child's overall wellbeing?

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall wellbeing?

We value excellent support care and guidance. We operate a tutorial based system where students meet with their tutor every morning and are also supported by their Leader of Learning.

What specialist services and expertise is available at or accessed by the staff?

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

Where a student’s needs are not being met by the strong, evidence-based support  we provide, specialist help will be sought from agencies such as educational psychologists, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), specialist teachers, support services, supported employment services and therapists.

If, despite us having taken relevant and purposeful action to identify, assess and meet the needs of a student, the student is still not making the expected progress, we, or the young person will consider requesting an Education Healthcare Needs Assessment. At all points of this process, both the student and parents will fully involved.

How are staff trained regarding SEND?

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEND have had or are having?

Ms Amanda Eggett is the SENCO and is currently undertaking the national accreditation for SEND co-ordinators.

We strive to ensure that all staff are able to deliver high quality teaching and learning experiences within the classroom and provide an extensive CPD programme for all staff.

What activities outside the classroom will there be?

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

Trips and extra-curricular activities are open to all students subject to risk assessments and funding.

How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

The oldest and main part of Durham Sixth Form Centre is over one hundred years old. Access to the first floor is via two original staircases.

Although it is not possible to make adaptations so that all of Durham Sixth Form Centre is fully accessible, reasonable adjustments have been made to the building to accommodate students with accessibility needs.

Wherever possible, we are committed to ensuring that all subjects and curriculum routes are accessible to all students. We will make reasonable adjustments to the curriculum plan and individual study programmes to accommodate students with sensory or physical needs.

My child is going to be starting or leaving soon, how will you help them?

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

We recognise that some students with special educational needs, disabilities or those considered vulnerable may need additional support with transition to higher education, apprenticeships or employment. They may also need support in securing relevant experience to make such transitions. We will make this explicit in their planning and support.

What is available to help my child with their education?

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

Our Headteacher will establish a clear picture of the funds available and consider a strategic approach to meeting SEN in the context of the total resources available from the national funding formula and top up funding.

Where high needs funding is required, we will work with the council to secure additional support that is in excess of the nationally prescribed threshold.

With reference to Personal Budgets, we understand that the councils must secure the prior agreement of Durham Sixth Form Centre, where:

  • A Direct Payment is proposed for special educational provision or additional learning support.
  • It is intended that any of the student provision is to be delivered on our premises.
  • It is expected that we will receive contributions from the top up funding.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

With the student and their parent/carer, we will discuss all the relevant information gathered and plan support and intervention to meet the individual student’s needs and aspirations.

At every consultation evening there will be an opportunity for parents to talk to both the SENCO and the Leader of Learning.

There are many opportunities for parents to be involved in the life of the centre including the opportunity to stand as a parent Governor.
