Hartwell School

Hartwell School is a co-educational, independent specialist day school in Stockton providing high quality education for young people between the ages of 5 and 18. The school meets the needs of a diverse group of pupils’ social, emotional and mental health needs, alongside a range of other associated conditions.

Our experienced staff team have the expertise and empathy to create a highly specialised and individualised learning environment in which all our pupils can reach their potential, both in terms of their academic and social development. 

Our highly resourced school provides opportunity to study subjects and courses in a wide range of academic and vocational disciplines.  Our specially designed classrooms, workshops and learning spaces offer all of our pupils endless opportunity to discover, learn and achieve.

Education

  • Small class groups (maximum 8 pupils)
  • All National Curriculum subjects available plus an alternative curriculum and individual programmes
  • A full range of accreditation, academic and vocational qualifications, including GCSEs
  • Individual academic and vocational packages and work experience placements
  • Access to personalised intervention programmes to improve literacy and numeracy

 Staffing

  • A highly qualified, diverse and well trained staff team that work closely with individual pupils to meet their educational and social needs
  • An ethos of ongoing self-development and commitment to delivering the highest standards possible, which includes access to Witherslack Group’s induction process and comprehensive training packages
  • All staff trained by Witherslack Group’s Clinical Team
  • Dedicated family liaison to enable consistent communication with parents and carers and to support induction for new pupils
  • Internal and external quality assurance

 Therapy

  • In school clinical support which liaises with external agencies and school staff to provide highly effective and individualised therapeutic interventions
  • Education Psychology assessments and Speech and Language assessments as part of initial assessment process with on-going support programmes and resources
  • Social Communication group sessions led by Speech and Language Therapist and Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs)
  • Sensory needs taken into account in classroom environment, including sensory resource packs in each class and movement breaks included in lessons, if required

 Support

  • Internal Team Around the Child (ITAC) meetings where all staff involved with the child discuss progress and plan new strategies, establishing an integrated approach between education and therapy
  • Specialist Support Assistant allocated to each class to support pupils throughout school day, plus additional 1:1 staff, if required
  • Pastoral Care Team available to support pupils’ access to learning throughout the day
  • Home visits and support programmes, if needed
  • Positive reward systems in place - points system and in class rewards
  • Structured break and lunch time activities

 Environment

  • Subject specific classrooms, Primary and Secondary Food Technology areas, Music and Media suites, and stare of the art Science laboratory
  • Vocational Studies area which includes workshops for Car Mechanics, Plastering, Plumbing, Electrical and Construction, as well as a Hair and Beauty Salon and outdoor area for Horticulture Studies
  • Learning environments focused on the needs of students, including low arousal classrooms, clear teaching walls, individual workstations when required, and visual support
  • Spacious outdoor areas, designated primary playground and multi-use games area, which all allow for a varied outdoor education and sports programmes to be offered
