SSAFA - The Armed Forces Charity

SSAFA is the UK's oldest national Tri-Service charity and have continually supported the Armed Forces and their families since its foundation in 1885.

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, formerly known as Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association, provides lifelong support to serving men and women and veterans from the British Armed Forces, their families or dependents.  Additionally, we offer support on behalf of the Merchant Marine Associations and Charities.

Anyone irrespective of rank who currently serves or has ever served in the RN/RM, Army or RAF including their families, both regular and reservists, are eligible for help from SSAFA.

The following people are also eligible for SSAFA’s support: spouses and former spouses (Husband or Wife), Widows and widowers including civil partners.

SSAFA’s professional staff and network of 5,000 volunteers assist more than 90,000 people every year, from World War Two to Afghan Veterans and their families. 

SSAFA Durham comprises 5 Divisions within the Co Durham, with a small Branch headquarters based in Durham city.

Durham SSAFA Divisions are: 

Darlington - Darlington area 

East Durham - covering the area from Seaham down to Hartlepool and across to Durham city. 

Hartlepool - Hartlepool area

North Durham - covering Consett, Stanley, Chester le Street and Durham City 

South West Durham - covering from the A19, Sedgefield, Newton Aycliffe, Spennymoor, Bishop Auckland, Barnard Castle to Stanhope.

Referral and availability notes

Veterans and serving military personnel can self refer to SSAFA at any time. We also accept referrals from other Service charities and organisations, emergency services, social services, prisons etc. If in doubt, please call us.

In every case, the military service of the client must be verifiable by production of service record, discharge papers or via a Verification of Service request.
