Newcastle Castle

Visit our family-friendly historic attraction to reveal the story of how Newcastle began, the reason the city got its name and to walk in the steps of the people who lived and died in the shadow of Newcastle Castle.

Steeped in history this imposing Norman fortress, in the centre of Newcastle Upon Tyne, is a rugged reminder of Northern England's turbulent history. This was no baron's stately home. Newcastle Castle is a grim reminder of royal authority where armies gathered, and criminals were imprisoned and executed. It is where the story of Newcastle began, the reason the city got its name and has the most commanding views over the City and the River Tyne.

We are located a 10 minute walk from Newcastle Central Station and there is a bus stop right outside the Black Gate, serviced by buses towards Gateshead, Chester-le-Street and Durham. We have limited on-street parking outside the Vermont Hotel. There are 2 parking spaces for Blue Badge holders opposite the Bridge Hotel. The nearest major public car park is located on Dean Street, less than a 10 minute walk away from the Castle.
