How do you identify Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

We are proative in ensuring that pupils with a SEND are identified quickly, and support is put in place as soon as possible. We work with a variety of different agencies to ensure that pupils with a SEND receive the best support possible.

Parents can approach the school at anytime if they have a concern about their child, including if they believe they may have a SEND.

We work closely with partner schools to ensure that there is smooth transition between schools when KS2 pupils leave us to move to KS3.

How will you support my child with their special educational needs and disability?

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

At Bowburn Primary School we believe that children thrive, are successful and develop a lifetime love of learning with a quality early years education. Our main aim is for children to be as independent as possible and are ready for main school. We encourage children's social and emotional development from the moment they join us. We can offer up to 12 FTE places for children who are two years old and 39 FTE places for pupils who are 3 years old.

How will you make sure my child's education meet their needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's young person's needs?

The curriculum is matched to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum but also tailored to pupils' levels of ability and of course their interests.

We ensure that sessions and lessons match pupils needs by differentiating the learning, and pupils may work in whole class situations, small groups, or one to one with a teacher or member of staff. Our dedicated team of support staff are trained to provide support for pupils as and when it is needed.

How will we know my child is progressing?

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

We share information regularly with parents, for example through parent/carer parents meetings, and through regular (termly) SEND review meetings or statutory reviews for pupils with EHCPs.

Mrs Clark, our SENCo is available to talk to parents and keep parents updated. She is in school every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Mrs Clark and the teachers/support staff are available to advise parents on the best ways to support pupils at home. This information is also shared at SEND reviews when the child's SEND support plan outcomes will be discussed.

How will you support my child's overall wellbeing?

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall wellbeing?

We understand and recognise that pupils' general wellbeing is a crucial part of successful learning.

Staff share information on pupils regularly, and any concerns are raised with senior staff or the SENCo in the first instance. We encourage health and wellbeing through our PSHE curriculum which has been developed and revised by the whole staff. We also have outside agency visitors to ensure health and wellbeing are promoted.

We employ a full time Parent Support Adviser (Miss K Gates) who can offer support to pupils and parents. Miss Gates is based in the Infant building.

At Bowburn Primary School we employ a dedicated school counsellor (our 'magic listener')  from IMPACT North East who works in school to support pupils every Wednesday. They also runs a lunchtime 'drop in' session which all pupils can access if they wish to discuss any issues they may have. IMPACT staff provide workshop support for pupils e.g. Anti bullying, SATs stress buster, a young carer's group Mental Health Awareness workshops etc. Parents can also access support and help from IMPACT should they need it.

What specialist services and expertise is available at or accessed by the staff?

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

We access a wide range of services and expertise when needed, including:

  • Speech and Language service (SALT)
  • CAMHS
  • Social and Communication team (SCAT)
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Cognition and Learning team
  • Educational Psychology service
  • Behaviour Intervention Team
  • Beanstalk Reading Support

...amongst others.

We also have a dedicated Speech and Language therapist who attends school every week to work with pupils in small groups or one to one.

How are staff trained regarding SEND?

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEND have had or are having?

Training is vital to ensure staff are updated on issues affecting pupils and have the skills they need to support pupils in school.

We access training from:

  • SEND service (Durham County Council) - various training attended by SENCO and other staff
  • SENCO training and termly updates
  • NASENCO qualification (SENCO)
  • Autistic Spectrum Condition training - all staff
  • Lego Therapy - support staff
  • Read Write Inc training - support staff
  • Eklan training- support staff

  • Catch Up Numeracy training - support staff and maths leader
  • CAMHS training - various staff
  • Mental health awareness training - all staff
  • 'I Can' Training (speech and language)
  • 'Getting Along' programme (social skills)

All staff have had training to ensure outcomes for pupils in Support Plans are SMART.

What activities outside the classroom will there be?

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

We would wish all pupils to be able to take part in trips and visits, including those with SEND. Parents and staff would need to meet to discuss the specific requirements and needs of pupils while on a residential or other trip, and if possible, these would be catered for. We ensure that specific support staff accompany children, if necessary.

How will you support my child's needs?

How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

Our accessibility plan is available to view on our school website. We are a two story building with disabled access.

What is available to help my child with their education?

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

Resources are allocated and matched to pupils' SEND. We use 'top up funding' to buy in services and resources as needed.

This is reviewed regularly, and we use expert help, for example from the SEND service, to ensure the funding is used appropriately.

What support can I expect for my child?

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

This is made by the Head Teacher and the SENCo and is based on the pupil's SEND, recommendations in EHCPs or by other professionals, and the resources and staffing available.

How will I be involved in my child's education?

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

Parents can support us in various ways. We welcome volunteer helpers for example to help out with hearing pupils read or attend visits. We often need help on school trips or with school events. Please get in touch with the school office.

My child is going to be starting or leaving soon, how will you help them?

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

Our transition processes are strong. We liaise with partner schools throughout the year, but specifically when pupils in Year 6 are ready to move on to their next stage of education.

SEND reviews held in the summer term will usually include staff from the school that pupils are moving to, as well as other professionals involved with the child. If necessary, a plan will be drawn up to ensure smooth transition.

Visits can also be arranged, including extra visits for pupils with SEND, to ensure pupils are familiar with the building and staff at their new school.
