The Laurels Child Care Company Ltd

We offer ‘30 hours childcare for working parents’

Recently rated as outstanding by Ofsted, we are a small 38 place day nursery in Gilesgate, catering for children aged 3 months to 5 years.

We offer outstanding quality care and education and pride ourselves on offering a home from home environment for all our children.

We offer pre-school education and have a qualified teacher on site, as well as offering 30 hours to those who qualify. Wrap around care is available for children who access the adjoining nursery school as well as sharing the 30 hours for those families who prefer to split the time between us and nursery school.

We have a six place baby room (for 0-2 years) with a modest outdoor garden area which is accessed every day regardless of the weather.

Our 32 place pre-school room (for 2-5 years) has a newly extended adjoining classroom for children accessing their nursery education as well as offering a large outdoor play area and a developing allotment area. Along with offering lots of outdoor play and education on the premises, we also venture into the local woods for our Woodland School for den building and other exciting activities. Woodland School promotes all areas of children's development and teaches life skills all whilst exploring the natural environment.

In our recently extended conservatory room, our 3 year olds can engage in more focussed activities with our qualified teacher. This space allows for high quality teaching and learning, in order to promote school readiness.

We work very much 'in the moment' and the children lead their own learning however, we do recognise that adult intervention is necessary at times in order to close any gaps in learning.

Local Offer

Local Offer description

We are committed to providing our children with full and timely support for any special educational need or disability.

We have two Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators (SENCO) who attend a full range of training courses available to us through Durham County Council's Education Development Team to maintain their knowledge of SEND.

We are currently involved in a maths hub where we will receive support in developing and progressing Maths outcomes for children.

We are based within a One Point Hub, so work closely with various professionals on site. This enables us to provide the best possible care for all our children.

Staff are all up-skilled as and when required to suit the needs of the children. For example, all staff have had training around peg feeding to co-inside with children attending our setting.

How does the early year's provision identify and assess children with special educational needs and disabilities?

How does the early year's provision identify and assess children with special educational needs and disabilities?

We work closely with parents to establish any specific needs of our children. We carry out termly development assessments (Flying From the Start) of our children from which we gather data. Any gaps in learning are easily identified and appropriate measures are put in place to enable us to enhance our provision to potentially close these gaps.

How will the curriculum be matched to meet children's developmental needs?

We promote individualised learning for our children and set realistic targets and next steps, tailored to meet each child's needs in line with the EYFS framework.
