How does the early year's provision identify and assess children with special educational needs and disabilities?

How does the early year's provision identify and assess children with special educational needs and disabilities?

We respect parents/carers as the primary experts of their child/ren and our number one priority is to be here to support both a child and their family the best we possibly can to ensure that our children get the best start in their lives. This includes working with the appropriate professionals to offer the most appropriate and effective support.

A series of transitional visits enable us to begin recording/using information from parents/carers and any professionals already working with the child/family to build up a care plan which is then used and built on as the child settles into the nursery.

Support and working in partnerships will remain throughout the child/ren's time with us.

How will the curriculum be matched to meet children's developmental needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to meet children's developmental needs?

A support plan can  be created around the child's needs, interests and next steps in their learning journey. We value what their play preferences and abilities are and use these as a familiar base to build upon.

Children are offered hands-on activities that match a child's curiosity, interest, level of challenge and style of learning. They are often open ended activities that allow a child to explore and lead their own learning. Staff support, observe and use these observations to enhance and make progress in their skills and knowledge.

Information from specialist professionals is used to build up a programme which can be delivered to an individual or small group of children on a daily basis.

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the early years setting?

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the early years setting?

We welcome all services involved with the child and their family into the nursery to observe children in their own environment. We use their expert knowledge to have any questions answered or receive reassurance that the support they are getting is appropriately challenging and therefore effective.

We use the SEND team at DCC for further information, any training that we require and our SENCO attends the appropriate meetings to ensure that we have the most up to date information around policy, procedure and practice.

What training have the staff supporting children with SEND had, or are having?

What training have the staff supporting children with SEND had, or are having?

Staff receive specific training relating to the children we have in our care.

We believe that the information we receive from parents and professionals already involved with the child gives us such valuble insight as it is personal and meaningful.

We currently have a number of staff who have had training with regards to caring for children who have specific medical, social and commucative needs, have a global development delay etc.. We also believe experience is key and our team have various levels of expertise in a number of additional needs.

How accessible is the early years setting environment? (indoors/outdoors)

How accessible is the early years setting environment? (indoors/outdoors)

Being a ground floor nursey means all disabled access is catered for. A large garden is immediately accessible from both nursery rooms.

We are more than happy to adapt our provision where we can.

We are an all inclusive nursery who, if we can, will provide care and education for all children.

How will the early years provision prepare and support my child(ren's) transition to their next educational establishment?

How will the early years provision prepare and support my child(ren's) transition to their next educational establishment?

All transitions are handled sensitively and we give value giving support to a child's emotional wellbeing during these times.

We work closely with parents, professionals already involved and the next setting to ensure a full exchange of important information occurs.

Regular visits from the nursery with children’s Key Worker, to their next setting take place. The new setting's teachers and support staff are invited to nursery to meet and get to know the children (we ensure the child's voice is heard). Parents can discuss anxieties and together we can look for solutions to overcome them.

Should they require further information once transition has taken place, we extend an open invitation for the next setting to get in touch.

We also appriciate that a transition is not only from our setting to another but also takes place during their time with us - starting at our nursery and then (if required) moving from one room into another. Being an open plan nursery helps with this and we work hard to ensure that all children are familiar with all staff to enable a smoothe transition.

All staff work together to best support each child and their family.
