Newker Primary School

We are a primary and nursery school located in Chester-le-Street. We aim to deliver an outstanding education for all of our children and work closely in partnership with Valley Kids Club who offer wrap around care for children of working parents.

Our Nursery is an integral part of our school and provides children with firm foundations upon which to build as they develop skills, knowledge and understanding. We also welcome children who may not be continuing their school career with ourselves.

How do you identify Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

We encourage parents to raise concerns they may have about their child's needs. We are then able to plan the best way forward together. This may mean a period of closer monitoring in school, involvement of other agencies to carry out assessments and parents liaising closely with our SEND coordinator and class teachers.

Where we have concerns previously unidentified, we will always involve you in any process of identification and support of and for your child's needs.

How will you support my child with their special educational needs and disability?

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

All children are valued at Newker Primary School and we aim for them to meet their full potential. School staff work with children in whole class, small group or on a one-to-one basis to support their needs enabling all to develop skills, knowledge and understanding at a pace appropriate to the child.

How will you make sure my child's education meet their needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's young person's needs?

The majority of children will progress through the National Curriculum without the need for additional support. Where this is not appropriate for an individual child, we tailor the curriculum or its delivery, to ensure we build upon what that child can already do, so the child is able to progress.

How will we know my child is progressing?

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

We provide regular feedback to parents each term through parents' evenings and in the summer a written report. Where children have additional needs, we will invite you in more regularly to discuss your child's progress and how we can work together to maximise their potential. This will include drawing up together support or Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans depending on the need.

Where there is a need for more regular contact, we may suggest a home school diary.

How will you support my child's overall wellbeing?

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall wellbeing?

Our vision and values have a clear emphasis on the development and support for the whole child. To facilitate this, we have a senior member of staff who is responsible for the personal, social and emotional wellbeing of our pupils. We have a counsellor who comes into school each week to provide counselling sessions for those children we feel would benefit.

How are staff trained regarding SEND?

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEND have had or are having?

Staff receive regular training with respect to support children with a range of needs. This may be done by our SENCO, the council or an external agency.

Where children present with a need staff have not been trained to support, we ensure appropriate training is provided.

What activities outside the classroom will there be?

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

We pride ourselves as being an inclusive school and take all practical steps to ensure children are fully involved in the same activities as their peers. We do however accept that this cannot always be possible.

We are built on a large sloping site, but a number of features have been installed, such as ramps between departments, to make it more accessible.

We have a range of resources in school to support a range of needs and we take advice from assessment reports when allocating these.

What support can I expect for my child?

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

This will be made in discussion with parents and a range of professionals who have been involved in the assessment of the child.

How will I be involved in my child's education?

We welcome the involvement of parents in our school and are delighted that this has increased recently.

There are a number of ways parents can do this:

  • Join our PTA and help out at events
  • Volunteer to help in a class or on school visits
  • Come along to assemblies and Stay and Play Days

My child is going to be starting or leaving soon, how will you help them?

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

We liaise closely with local secondary schools. Children attend for experience and transition days. Where children have additional needs, our local schools provide additional visits. We ensure information is passed onto children's next school to further support transition.
