Local Offer

Local Offer description

Jack in the Box day care understand that all children have different experiences, lifestyles and cultures. They all learn, develop and progress through individual stages during play based learning.

Our aim is to ensure that all children are safe, and having fun whilst learning. We endeavor to meet the individual child’s unique needs by working closely with their families and other professionals and adapting our environments and planning to allow all children the best possible start within their learning journey.

Many children at some stage in their journey require additional support and care, during these times, our Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCO) may work alongside other practitioners and professionals to ensure the support and care provided is appropriate for the individual child and their family.

With parental consent Jack in the Box have worked alongside a variety of different professionals, we have strong links with our local Health Visitors and staff from One Point services such as family support workers.

Jack in the Box also work in partnership with specialist professionals such as Speech and Language Therapists, Educational Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Specialist Teachers for the Hearing Impaired and Physio Therapists.

All children who attend Jack in the Box have an individual learning plan, these plans are conducted using information and views from parents, nursery staff and other professionals.

All staff within the setting provide appropriate, exciting experiences daily that help and support children in achieving their goals and aspirations. Children’s wellbeing, challenging their learning and providing successful opportunities for all children is a fundamental aspect of our setting.

Practitioners frequently attend further training events and seek advice from others including the local authority to ensure they are pro-active in using their knowledge and skills to ensure that their practice and teaching abilities are of a high standard.

Practitioners have training and experience in supporting children with a range of special educational needs such as:

  • Autism spectrum disorders
  • Speech and Language delays and disorders
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Hearing impaired
  • Physical delays and motor difficulties
  • Sensory difficulties
  • Severe food allergies such as nuts and wheat

Special educational needs describes the needs of a child who has a difficulty or disability which may make learning harder for them than for other children of their age. Each child’s difficulties and disabilities are unique and will be supported using strategies that aid and teach them as individuals.

Jack in the Box are experienced in applying for both short term and long term funding from the local authority to support children with special educational needs.

How does the early year's provision identify and assess children with special educational needs and disabilities?

How does the early year's provision identify and assess children with special educational needs and disabilities?

If your child has been identified as having special educational needs prior to coming to our nursery, we will work with all professionals to ensure there is a smooth transition and support plan in place.

If you think your child may have special educational needs then speak to your child's key person, the manager/SENDCO or your health visitor to express your concern.

We will work very closely with your family and other professionals to decide the best way to support your child. This will includes ensuring everyone is involved in the assessment process and a graduated approach is used to celebrate progress and identify any new interventions. Your child may receive additional support from other staff if required and specialist high quality teaching stratagies may be used to monitor progress and learning.

Children have specific targets that they will work towards achieving over a specific length of time. These will be set with the family and any other professionals to ensure that we are all working towards the same goals. These targets will be regularly reviewed and new targets set. Our staff have very good relationships with the familes of the children that they support and will be able to offer support with activities that may be suitable for the children to do at home. Other professionals will also be able to provide examples of activities that can be done at home.

How will the curriculum be matched to meet children's developmental needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to meet children's developmental needs?

The early years curriculum lends itself to being child friendly and follows children's own interests and works at their level. If additional support is required specialist staff will make changes to activities or provide physical support to allow children to access all of the early years curriculum. We will make any environmental adaptations that we are able to as and when required and work with outside agencies to make SMART targets that allow children to make progress at their own pace.

We are an inclusive setting, and no children would be excluded from any activity or outings. For children who require additional support there would also be a member of staff to support on a 1-1 basis if required.
For shorter visits there would be additional staff to ensure that the child was able to access the visit.

Wellbeing is an integral part of the early years foundation stage and the care component of the early years curriculum carries equal weight with the educational expectations. Staff who support children with SEND are experienced and have considerable knowledge of supporting children with a wide range of SEND.

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the early years setting?

Our nursery has access to a wide range of services which include:

  • health visitors
  • speech therapy
  • educational psychology
  • family workers
  • occupational therapy
  • sensory team
  • ASC team

What training have the staff supporting children with SEND had, or are having?

What training have the staff supporting children with SEND had, or are having?

We have staff that have many years experience working with children with a wide range of SEND. These staff and other nursery staff have had training in Makaton, British Sign Language, Elklan, managing difficult behaviour in children with ASC, physical handling of children with physical conditions, supporting children with hearing impairment.

Staff have regular training through Durham's SEND and incusion Early Years Specialist team who are always on hand to offer advice support and tailored training when required.

How accessible is the early years setting environment? (indoors/outdoors)

How accessible is the early years setting environment? (indoors/outdoors)

We work very hard to ensure that we comply with the Equality Act and the building complies with DDA.  We have ramps and handrails, wider doors for wheelchairs and disabled toilet facilities. Some of our outdoor environment may not be fully accessible to wheelchair users but alternative provision could be arranged in another, more accessible, part of the garden.

All indoor activities can be adapted to make them fully accessible.

How will the early years provision prepare and support my child(ren's) transition to their next educational establishment?

How will the early years provision prepare and support my child(ren's) transition to their next educational establishment?

We work very closely with the staff from the receiving setting. There will be a meeting to introduce the family and new staff and we would arrange a series of supported visits if appropriate.

Staff at the receiving setting may take photographs of the new environments/staff for the child to become familiar with. Receiving staff would be part of the next target setting to ensure that there is continuity for the child and the family.

Team members would support each child in a unique was that was purposeful to their needs and personality.
