How do you identify Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

We will observe children once they have settled into nursery and discuss any concerns with parents. If you think your child may have special needs, talk to your child's key person initially then this may lead to further discussions on how best to support your child, with the SENDCo, if necessary.

How will you support my child with their special educational needs and disability?

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

We support all children and treat them as individuals. Some children just need a little longer to mature, others may need a bit of extra support with say, language skills. We may also involve other services to best support your child, such as Speech Therapists or Educational Psychologists. We would do all this with parental consent.

Some children with particular needs are supported by outreach staff who are specially trained in SEND and support individual children.

How will you make sure my child's education meet their needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's young person's needs?

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, which is very child-centred and individualised to suit each child's needs. Sometimes children might be supported with simpler language or the visual support of pictures.

How will we know my child is progressing?

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

You will see your child's key person twice a day, at drop off and pick up times. This is a good time to have a brief chat about the day's events. We also have "Stay and Play" days where you are welcome to join in the nursery sessions. We keep assessments on each child which can be shared with parents. Children who are on the Special Educational Needs Register have a School Support Plan which is reviewed termly, at a meeting with parents, where new targets are agreed.

How will you support my child's overall wellbeing?

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall wellbeing?

The wellbeing and care of every child is our utmost concern in nursery, and we keep close communication with parents to ensure this happens.

What specialist services and expertise is available at or accessed by the staff?

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

Our Acting Headteacher has the National Qualification for SENDCos. Most of our staff have the speech and language qualification, ELKLAN. We have a Forest School trained practitioner, who works with children who may be experiencing social or emotional difficulties. We link in with all the SEND services provided for schools in County Durham and so have access to Speech and Language Therapist, Educational Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Health Visitors, GPs, Family Workers etc.

How are staff trained regarding SEND?

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEND have had or are having?

We are continually striving to learn more and have a programme of CPD for next year, which includes more language training.

What activities outside the classroom will there be?

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

Your child will be invited to all activities both inside and outside the school and parents will discuss whether a particular trip is suitable for their child.

How will you support my child's needs?

How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

We are fully accessible, with ramps for wheelchairs, a disabled toilet and disabled car parking space.

What is available to help my child with their education?

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

We have lots of open ended resources which can be accessed by all children no matter what their developmental level. We also have some specialist equipment such as visual timetables for children with ASC as well as "chew toys" and weighted blankets for children with sensory difficulties etc.

What support can I expect for my child?

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

We make all decisions jointly with parents.

How will I be involved in my child's education?

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

Parents are welcome in school at any time. Parents see their child's key person every day at drop off and collection times. We have lots of family events during the year where parents can come and spend the session with their child and chat to the teacher. You can see what your child has been doing in the nursery by joining in with our digital Learning Journals and posting learning from home too.

My child is going to be starting or leaving soon, how will you help them?

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

We have excellent transition arrangements for children who are leaving nursery and going on to local primary schools. Meetings are arranged between our SENDCo and the staff of primary schools. Some children with SEND may benefit from additional transition visits to their next school, which can be arranged.
