How does the early year's provision identify and assess children with special educational needs and disabilities?

All children’s learning and development are monitored and assessed to review their progress. We use the early years outcomes as an aid to help them understand the outcomes children should be working towards. We assess the extent to which a child is developing at expected levels for their age.  Where a child appears to be behind expected level’s or where a child’s progress gives cause for concern, we consider all the information about the child’s learning and development from within and beyond the setting, including formal assessments and practitioner observations.

Parents/carers will be consulted at the first opportunity in a sensitive manner.  We will ask parents/ carers to contribute to observations and discuss any concerns they may have about their child’s needs and the provisions being made available to them. We will plan together the most effective actions appropriate to the support the child and family. We will work in partnership with the Education Development Service and seek advice and support, including DCATCH funding.

We endeavour to provide an inclusive environment by:

  • Long, medium and short term planning for all children contains approaches ensuring differentiation to support the inclusion and progress of all children
  • Differentiation is embedded into planning to ensure inclusion for all children and that all children experience success and gain confidence
  • Adapting materials and teaching styles to deliver our learning activities to children’s individual needs
  • Monitoring how each child with SEN learns, using a special carer system (key person)

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the early years setting?

Where a child continues to make less than expected progress, despite support and interventions that are matched to the child’s area of need, practitioners will with the consent of parents/carers involve appropriate specialists’. These may include Area SENCO teams, health visitors, Educational Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy Service, medical services etc. With these outside agencies, the SENCO, parents/carers will devise and implement a support plan.

Team members are highly trained in supporting children with SEND.

Training to date has included:

  • I CAN talk
  • Early identification
  • Speech and language development
  • Makaton
  • Communication development
  • Early movement
  • Dyspraxia

Our team receive regular in house and bespoke training. Special carers attend additional courses to ensure they are fully equipped to support children effectively.

0-3 year old provision is accessible via wheelchair, however 3-4 year old provision is upstairs.
