Leadgate Community Primary School

We are a community primary school, opened in April 2015 when Leadgate Community Junior School and Leadgate Infants and Nursery were amalgamated. We have approximatley 190 children on roll and cover Years 1-6 as well as a 26 place nursery.

We have seven classrooms, two library rooms, a resource centre and two halls split across two sites. We have extensive playing fields, gardens, woodland and an allotment garden.

Our core vision is:

We care about their children – every child matters – we remove the barriers to learning whatever they may be.

We have high expectations for all children and want them to be proud of what they achieve. We support an ethos of work hard and play hard.

Our children are polite and well mannered to visitors and we create a caring ethos. Children are prepared to face the world of work. Confident, capable, flexible learners.

We promote enjoyment as well as education - children want to come to school and children have a voice!

We involve the community in as much as we can and see this as the future of the school - by working together, we support the potential of all pupils to succeed.

How do you identify Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

In order to address the needs of an individual child, we must accurately identify the areas of concern. Concerns may be raised by parents, teachers, health workers or other medical personnel. Children are closely monitored by school and achievement tracked, as well observing emotional well-being and any social communication needs. If there are concerns the class teacher and SENCO will look at how the child can effectively be supported.

We may put into place a support plan containing an individual targets or liaise with home, agencies or medical professionals. Parents will be informed and included in this process and meetings arranged with the SENCO. Working together ensures the best progress for the child. 

How will you make sure my child's education meet their needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's young person's needs?

We offer targeted intervention group work where children are supported by a member of staff focussing on specific needs taken from support packages. The intervention groups can focus on addressing literacy and numeracy skills, speech language and communication, social skills and therapeutic work and targets are set by SENCO and class teachers.

Within the classroom teachers will adapt their curriculum to meet the needs of any child with additional needs offering practical support and differentiated work where appropriate.

We can provide children with SEN therapeutic work through art therapy, Lego therapy and early interventions in SALT and behaviour support. We can also provide visual timetables for children as well as adapting weekly timetables to offer more personalised learning suited to their needs.

We will set homework weekly however this can be discussed with parents and carers as to how to deliver it appropriately for each child.

Consultation with parents is a key part in providing children with successful support within school. We invite parents to attend review meetings, parent’s evenings and a variety of other meetings during the time their child attends school. 

We invite agencies to liaise with parents and offer a venue for meetings giving parents a forum for discussing their child’s needs. We are able to consult with parents and discuss how parents feel their child can best be supported and they will endeavour to implement this within reasonable adjustment to school life and staffing.

We endeavour to be an environment where all children are included, make progress and each child valued for their individuality. This will be through meeting the individual needs of children consulting with agencies, parents, advisory teachers and the children themselves.

We work very hard providing intervention groups catering to individual needs. We have well trained staff who are experienced with working alongside children supporting and ensuring the best progress is made. 

Our ethos is one of caring, supporting and building children’s confidence therefore they treat all children positively and equally, and interventions are viewed positively by the children. Within the school, they can accommodate within reasonable adjustment children working below academic expectations, with a diagnosis of autistic spectrum condition, dyslexia, dyscalculia, speech and language difficulties, ADD and ADHD, Downs Syndrome, emotional and social needs and other specific learning difficulties.

Staff are well supported by the SENCO to ensure the needs of the children are understood and met. Staff have attended: 

  • Reading recovery training 
  • Specific learning difficulties training
  • ASD training
  • Positive handling training

My child is going to be starting or leaving soon, how will you help them?

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

Moving from one phase of education to another can be daunting for all children and to support the changes they have a well-established transition process.

Children who move from infants to juniors will be offered visits, to meet new staff and parents will be invited into school.

Children who need greater support during transition will be offered the tools they need such as photo albums of new school, books about moving schools and extra visits.

Consett Academy offer transition days and access to the school from year 4 onwards, allowing children to become familiar with staff and premises. During the summer term children will have taster sessions at the school and they organise more visits for children who may need more support with the move. This process is repeated for other local secondary schools. 

Children with additional needs will be offered close support from school through personal books, extra visits and meetings with new staff. Staff will meet with inclusion officers and share information about each child in order for the transition to be as smooth as possible.

Any child with additional needs will be supported and a costed provision map drawn up. The funding will be proportional to need.
