How do you identify Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

Mainly teachers would make an initial concern to the SENCO if they believe that a child may require some additional help.  This may be from noticing changes in the child or seeing patterns within their work of difficulty.  On occasion parents will also contact the school if they have some concerns regarding their child. We would then work with parents to decide what extra support would be appropriate, deciding if, we can provide this or whether they need to seek external support.

How will you support my child with their special educational needs and disability?

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

As soon as a child has an identified need, we then put strategies in place to help support them with school life. This could be by providing them with tools, such as writing grips to help them with their work or giving them support from an adult within the classroom. We use the support of outside agencies such as Speech and Language to help support children more intensely during school hours. We work closely with the Educational Psychologist to ensure that children are assessed regularly and that positive steps are put in place to help the child.

How will you make sure my child's education meet their needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's young person's needs?

We follow a creative curriculum. This allows us to tailor the curriculum to suit the needs of our children. All children are set work at a level that is appropriate for them which is achievable whilst still giving them the challenge they need. Children who require it can access extra support to help them reach their goals in the curriculum so that they continue to work alongside their peers.

How will we know my child is progressing?

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

A good relationship between home and school is important to us. We work on this relationship by being open and honest and putting the needs of the child first. Your child will have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) that will have very specific targets designed for them. This will be reviewed every term or earlier if necessary, to ensure they are getting closer to achieving their goals.  We will hold regular parents' meetings and review meetings to keep everyone involved in the child’s education up to date with what is going on.

How will you support my child's overall wellbeing?

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall wellbeing?

Our motto is ‘The Grove School cares”. We see all children as individuals and like to develop relationships that are both strong emotionally as well as educationally. We know our children well and staff learn what their likes and dislikes are. We also learn any ‘triggers’ that children might have and treat all aspects of the child with sensitivity and respect. For the school, education is as important as the wellbeing of children.

What specialist services and expertise is available at or accessed by the staff?

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

The Grove access all levels of services within the local authority such as Educational Psychologist, Speech and Language team, ASD team, and counselling services. They work closely with services that parents request such as Mind or local GPs and strive to work as a team with the child at the centre.

How are staff trained regarding SEND?

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEND have had or are having?

We ensure that all staff have up to date training in order to provide a high level of support to the children. Staff attend regular CPD that keeps the school in line with county recommendations. We work as a team to ensure that staff can train in house with skills that they have developed through their lengthy experiences of work with SEND children. We complete tasks left by external agencies to ensure that there is a continuation in the support given that is consistent for the child.

What activities outside the classroom will there be?

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

We plan trips and activities carefully that ensure that all children can access them. For example, we ensure that the transport provided allows children with difficult in movement to access the trip. We also ensure through research and careful risk assessments, that all outside learning and trips are planned for the access of all.

How will you support my child's needs?

How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

We are fortunate to have a very accessible school that is suitable for children with difficulty in movement. The school has a flat playground and field as well as access ramps into school with wide corridors and classroom doors. There are disabled toilets. Children can engage in all activities within the school.

What is available to help my child with their education?

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

We are lucky to be well resourced with staff and tools that can support the needs of the children in their care. We are always reviewing the support we provide and seek out any additional training or resources that would help our children. We work with the council to utilise the support and resources available to us.

What support can I expect for my child?

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

The amount of support your child will receive depends on a number of factors. Firstly, if they have an EHCP this will dictate how much support your child is entitled to. Secondly, depending of the needs of the child that will determine how support is provided, i.e. if it is emotional support, counselling or educational support in class. We run many interventions which work on specific targets for the child tailored to their needs.

How will I be involved in my child's education?

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

We strive to work with parents to ensure that they are involved in all decisions surrounding a child. We work as a team to get the best outcome for the young people in their care.

My child is going to be starting or leaving soon, how will you help them?

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

We work closely with feeder schools to ensure a smooth transition can be arranged. On request, we can arrange for extra visits to the school so that your child feels comfortable with their new setting. We update the SENCO with good communication about your child.
