Local Offer

Local Offer description

We welcome all children and their families. We very much work in partnership with parents/carers to promote and encourage the best possible educational outcomes for children in our care.

Our Pre-School team have a wealth of experience working with young children with a range of individual needs. On admission children are allocated a key person who will work closely with the child and family to develop a relationship based around trust, mutual respect and support. Supporting and listening to the parents’ concerns and views of the child are key to building and maintaining this collaborative relationship.

We would very much welcome and encourage children, parents and carers to visit Howden-le-Wear Pre-School during the working day and to answer any further questions or queries you may have.

How does the early year's provision identify and assess children with special educational needs and disabilities?

How does the early year's provision identify and assess children with special educational needs and disabilities?

Within the first three weeks of entry, the pre-school key person will carry out initial assessments on the child using information gathered from the family and their observations within the setting. These assessments are carried out each term and help to identify progress in all the areas of learning and to identify any specific needs.

How will the curriculum be matched to meet children's developmental needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to meet children's developmental needs?

The key person will use the children’s interests to plan the next steps in their learning in order to meet the outcomes outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.

Throughout this planning process, the curriculum is differentiated to be fully inclusive for all children, allowing them to access a broad range of learning experiences that are both child and adult led.

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the early years setting?

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the early years setting?

We work closely with a broad range of external professionals; for example, health visitors, local authority professionals, speech and language therapists, medical professionals and educational psychologists; to provide the best possible all round care for the child.

The Pre-School Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator (SENCO) works collaboratively with Howden-le-Wear Primary School to ensure pre-school staff receive the appropriate qualifications and training in Special Educational Needs to ensure we meet the needs of all children in the setting.

What training have the staff supporting children with SEND had, or are having?

What training have the staff supporting children with SEND had, or are having?

Staff training has included Elklan Speech and Language support, Makaton and supporting children identified with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. The team constantly review training to meet the needs of the individual children in the setting.

How accessible is the early years setting environment? (indoors/outdoors)

How accessible is the early years setting environment? (indoors/outdoors)

Our pre-school setting is fully accessible both indoors and outdoors.

How will the early years provision prepare and support my child(ren's) transition to their next educational establishment?

How will the early years provision prepare and support my child(ren's) transition to their next educational establishment?

Our Pre-School work closely in partnership with Howden-le-Wear Primary School and operates within the same teaching space as the Reception class.

This enables both children and families to build relationships with staff and facilitate a smooth transition from pre-school into reception.

Pre-school children have timetabled access to the same resources as the rest of the school, which supports the smooth transition between pre-school and school.
