How does the early year's provision identify and assess children with special educational needs and disabilities?
- How does the early year's provision identify and assess children with special educational needs and disabilities?
We use Durham's assessment tool Flying From The Start as our assessment document. Every child has an individual learning journal which is regularly updated with detailed observations, linked to the Early Years Foundation stage.
These links are then transfered onto the flying from the start document. We have termly parent day's where the parents can attend to talk to their child's key person. During these discussions, we would talk about next steps to promote progression in all areas of learning.
Within our next steps we would (with parents consent) refer to any outside agencies we felt relevant to the individual child. We can obtain funding for one to one support or specialist resources through the County Durham SEND team. We have a SEND and equality and inclusion policies in place which all staff follow to provide the best possible service to our families.
How will the curriculum be matched to meet children's developmental needs?
- How will the curriculum be matched to meet children's developmental needs?
We plan our activities and experiences in line with Early Years Foundation Stage framework. We observe the children individually and as a group, planning activities which follow the interests of the children. Throughout the daily sessions, we act upon the interests of the children, seeking out relevant resources to further their play. We use the children's individual flying from the start assessments to inform our planning, making provisions for the needs of every child.

Our SENCo's regularly attend SENCO business meetings. We attend regular training courses available in our training directory. We liase regularly with our area SENDco to ensure we are meeting the needs of the children who attend our setting. Staff are trained to and have experience in using a peg feeding machine for children who are peg fed.
How accessible is the early years setting environment? (indoors/outdoors)
- How accessible is the early years setting environment? (indoors/outdoors)
Our building is a one level building. There are no steps to get into the building and no steps throughout the building. The building, indoors and out is wheelchair friendly. We have changing units within the children's bathrooms to enable us to fully meet the toileting needs of each and every child in our care. The indoor and outdoor environment is accessible for every child, furniture is low, activities are available on tables and on the floor. We can adapt the building to ensure it meets the needs of each and every child.
How will the early years provision prepare and support my child(ren's) transition to their next educational establishment?
- How will the early years provision prepare and support my child(ren's) transition to their next educational establishment?
We liase with the new settings for each individual child. We invite the staff from the new settings into our setting to observe the children, speak to their key person and look at the child's learning journey. We then arrange transition visits to the new setting, where a member of staff would attend the new setting with the child. Once the child has left our setting, we forward any relevant documents such as the individual flying from the start assessments.
Durham County Council's Families Information Service does not promote nor endorse the services advertised on this website. Anyone seeking to use/access such services does so at their own risk and may make all appropriate enquiries about fitness for purpose and suitability to meet their needs.
