How do you identify Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

Through regular assessment in class the school can identify if children need extra support in class. This could be through small group interventions or through external agencies.

How will you support my child with their special educational needs and disability?

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

In the nursery and reception class regular assessment and play based activities allow staff to identify children who need more time to revisit skills, this will be carried out through memorable play based activities.

How will you make sure my child's education meet their needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's young person's needs?

Oakley Cross staff plan an open ended broad and balanced curriculum which then is developed through children's interests.

How will we know my child is progressing?

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

Oakley Cross has regular meetings with parents to discuss progress, as well as informal meetings based on children's and parents needs.

How will you support my child's overall wellbeing?

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall wellbeing?

How are staff trained regarding SEND?

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEND have had or are having?

Ongoing training as required for the needs of our children. Our SENCO holds the NASENCO qualification and a Post Graduate in Vulnerable Learners.

What activities outside the classroom will there be?

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

All children will be included on trips and this is something which will be developed alongside children's needs. All children are welcome to attend any after school clubs and other activities.

How will you support my child's needs?

How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

The building is wheelchair friendly with a disabled toilet.

What is available to help my child with their education?

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

All resources prepared will meet children's needs in order to ensure they can access the curriculum.

What support can I expect for my child?

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

Levels of support are based upon findings from assessments and any other additional needs which a child may have. These are discussed by staff, SENCO and headteacher, along with children and parents.

How will I be involved in my child's education?

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

At Oakley Cross parents are included in all of their child's needs. Parents will be met with regularly to discuss their child's progress or changes to needs.

My child is going to be starting or leaving soon, how will you help them?

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

Oakley Cross has strong links with secondary schools and if children need additional visits during the transition period, these can be arranged.
