York House Nursery

We offer ‘30 hours childcare for working parents’.

We are a day nursery located near to the market place in Bishop Auckland. We were established in 1985, and achieved an 'Outstanding' report from Ofsted in 2015.  

York House Nursery is a homely, converted Victorian house with a large, secure garden and a purpose built bungalow with smaller garden for babies aged 0-2 years. Seperate rooms are available for 2-3 and 3-4 year olds. 

Children as young as two 'self-serve', thriving on the independence and mathematical skills it enables as they set the tables for their friends. 

Our nursery is used mostly by families who have been recommended or have used the nursery for previous siblings, but we welcome new families. 

We are registered for children up to 31 August following their fifth birthday. We provide half price holiday care for children that have left and gone to school. 

We have places for 2 year 'golden tickets', 3 and 4 year olds 15 hours funding and 3 and 4 year olds 30 hours funding.  We stretched this funding over the 51 weeks we are open.

We welcome all children and work with parents and any current professionals involved to offer a bespoke and differentiated service.

Learning opportunities are tailored to the child's stage and style of development and the nursery welcome input from external services such as Portage, Speech and Language, therapists, Outreach etc.

We work closely with Durham County Council's SEND service to ensure staff receive appropriate training.

The nursery respect parents as experts of their children. A series of transitional visits enables the nursery tap into and begin recording/using that information to build up a care plan which is then used and built on as the child settles into the nursery.

A key person is matched to the child and general observations feed in to the EYFS assessment 'Flying from the start' but the nursery also value greatly the EYFS Characteristics of Effective Learning. The journey and efforts of all children are celebrated, not just the outcome.

A support plan is created around the child's needs, interests and next steps. The nursery value what their play preferences are and use these as a familiar base to build on. 

Children are offered hands-on activities that match a child's curiosity, interest, level of challenge and style of learning. They are often open ended activities that allow a child to explore and lead their own learning. Staff support, observe and use these observations to enhance, tweak and build skills and knowledge.

Information from specialists is used to build up a programme which can be delivered on an individual, small group or free play basis.

The nursery welcome all services involved with the child in to nursery to see them in their own environment. The nursery tap in to their expert knowledge to have any questions answered or receive reassurance that their work with the child is appropriately challenging and therefore effective.

The nursery use the SEND service for further information and attend SEND business meetings to ensure they have the most up to date information around policy and practice.

Other settings are also contacted to see what is working well with children of similar abilities that can benefit the nursery's knowledge and practice.

Staff receive training specific to the children they care for.  The nursery try to use parents and the professionals already involved with the child. This means information is personal and meaningful.

Currently the nursery have staff with expereince in caring for children who are tube fed, have an Autism diagnosis, Fragile X, global delay, communication delay (Pecs, basic Makaton)

The nursery are always willing to learn :-)

Nursery is a converted Victorian building so offer playrooms over two floors. However, the nursery is creative with how they offer the service in order to meet the children's needs.

A ground floor extenesion means all disabled access is catered for and a large garden is very accessible. 

The nursery are more than happy to adapt their provision where they can.

All transitions are handled sensitively and the nursery value emotional high well-being.

The nursery works closely with parents and the next setting to ensure a full exchange of important information occurs, discuss anxieties and look for solutions to overcome them. Teachers and support staff are invited to nursery to meet and get to know the children and we ensure the child's voice is heard

Should they require further information once transition has taken place, the nursery extend an open invitiation for the next setting to get in touch. 

The nursery motto is "solutions not problems".
