How do you identify Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

A special educational need can be a number of different things. For example, a child may be having problems with reading, number work or behaviour, which can be helped by putting extra support in at school and by working in partnership with parents. It may also be due to a disability which makes it harder for a child to use the same educational facilities that the school provides for the majority of children. For some children this may be a temporary difficulty, while others may have a long term need for special help.

We consult with a wide range of agencies and partnerships to ensure the pastoral, medical and social needs of SEND children are met.

How will you make sure my child's education meet their needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's young person's needs?
  • Changing the way activities are planned and delivered.
  • Matching activities to the ability/need of each child (differentiation).
  • Adapting learning materials such as equipment and activities to suit each child’s needs.
  • Offer small group support to promote skills identified in the child’s Individual Education Plan.

How will we know my child is progressing?

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?
  • Have regular meetings and discussions with parents about what the school has planned for their child and how to link this with interests and passions demonstrated at home.
  • Make close observations during school to identify the types of activities and experiences that most engage each child so these can be developed further and be used inform future planning.
  • Involve SEND children with planning their own activities and encouraging them to share what they would like to learn and participate with.
  • Extend any resources that they show a preference for.
  • Most importantly, ensure the children with SEND are happy, motivated and make expected levels of progress throughout their time in school.

How are staff trained regarding SEND?

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEND have had or are having?

Members of staff have Paediatric First Aid and Safeguarding Level 1 qualification. In addition, our SEND support staff have a selection of training relating to Makaton, Movement Difficulties Programmes and specific training from Speech and Language Therapists. Each year the needs of children within our school are carefully considered and training organised to up-skill staff e.g. use of suction devices, PEGS feeding etc.

What activities outside the classroom will there be?

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

We ensure that all children are offered the opportunity to participate with activities outside of the classroom, by making reasonable adjustments to the organisation of these. For example, we ensure SEND children have an appropriate level of adult support if going out of school. We organise transport that provides appropriate access and staff complete a comprehensive risk assessment of any excursion to ensure all children are safe and included. In addition, SEND children are given the opportunity to participate in visits to settings that meet their specific needs, for example sensory play.

How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

The school has ramped access to buildings directly from the main entrance and yards. Parents of children with SEND that require access of this type are permitted to use the main entrance. There is a disabled toilet and a selection of specialist furniture within school to meet the needs of a variety of physical conditions, as well as lifts in areas with stairs.  

What support can I expect for my child?

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

All pupils follow the National Curriculum at a level and a pace that is appropriate to their abilities. The SEND philosophy places SEND children at the heart of personalised learning and our curriculum is tailored to meet individual pupils needs.
At times and when it is felt appropriate, modifications to the curriculum may be implemented. To successfully match pupil ability to the curriculum, we remain committed to:

  • A range of teaching and learning styles
  • Differentiated learning materials
  • Access to ICT and Technology
  • Additional in class support
  • Additional out of class support
  • Many Enrichment and Enjoyment opportunities to stimulate and motivate learning
  • Flexible groupings – including small group support work
  • An innovative and supportive curriculum
  • The appropriate use of rewards and sanctions
  • A broad range of extra-curricular activities, including homework club, one to one support and booster/extension sessions
  • Assessment procedures that emphasise pupils’ strengths and achievements
  • Applications during national testing at Key Stage 2 to obtain access arrangements as appropriate

How will I be involved in my child's education?

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

We are fully committed to encouraging parents to be involved with all aspects of school life. Parents are welcomed into school at the beginning and end of a school day and they are welcome to arrange additional dates to meet with the teacher to discuss progress and provision. Parents are invited to school performances, annual sponsored and Enterprise events, sports events and in certain year groups the phonics training sessions. They are also encouraged to help with the school garden as part of an after-school club.

My child is going to be starting or leaving soon, how will you help them?

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

Children with SEND are given an extensive level of support before they leave for a new school. Their teacher and SENCo will discuss with secondary colleagues how many transition visits can be arranged over and above those offered to children without SEND.

These additional visits to the new school will be carried out with the child and Secondary School Staff in the summer term. This ensures that bridges are built between schools, key information shared between staff and the child is given the opportunity to settle into a new routine with the support of a familiar adult.
