SEND at South Stanley Infant School

How do you identify Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

We carefully track pupil progress as well as monitoring their work and interactions with other children and adults in school. If there are any concerns staff would contact parents/carers to discuss concerns.

If you think your child may have special educational needs please contact the school SENCO: Mrs Jeanette Collier.

How will you support my child with their special educational needs and disability?

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

We will work with parents/carers and child to identify the best way to support them. This may include individual teaching/support, small group work or involvement with other professionals.

How will you make sure my child's education meet their needs?

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's young person's needs?

Work is matched to the needs of all pupils. This may include providing support in the form of extra resources eg apparatus, extra staff and an adapted curriculum to build on the child's strengths. All intervention work is carefully monitored by the SENCO.

How will we know my child is progressing?

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

Our open door policy enables you to drop into school at any time to discuss your child's progress.

We also offer:

  • Regular meetings with class teacher and SENCO.
  • Review meetings.
  • Parents evenings when targets are shared, and formal end of year reports to indicate levels of progress.

How will you support my child's overall wellbeing?

What activities outside the classroom will there be?

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

Support for children during school trips will depend upon the child's individual needs. We would contact parent/carer to discuss necessary arrangements.

There is always a high staff/pupil ratio.

How will you support my child's needs?

How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

School can be accessed by wheelchair users - each entrance has a ramp. There is a small staircase to Reception and Early Years but this area can be accessed through Foundation Stage entrance.

There is no disabled toilet in school.

What is available to help my child with their education?

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

We produce a detailed provision map that covers the needs of all children with SEND.

If we request further funding from the council, we produce a costed provision map to indicate the extra support needed for that child.

Some children will have a SEND support plan which is more detailed.

In a few cases a child may need an Educational Health Care Plan which reflects the more complex needs and support required.

There are regular SEN parent coffee mornings held in school to support you and your child.

What support can I expect for my child?

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

Initially, we will meet with parents/carers and discuss any concerns. These concerns will be recorded on a short note and interventions will be put in place and monitored for impact within school.

If progress remains significantly below expectations, we will refer to outside specialist agencies. An agreed support plan is drawn up and action relating to SEN support will follow a graduated approach (assess, plan, do and review model).

How will I be involved in my child's education?

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

Parents are welcome in school at any time. We have volunteers as classroom support, preparing resources, helping at school events and visits.

Each half term parents/carers are welcomed into school to attend our Awards Assembly and to enjoy tea/coffee.

We undertake a wide range of regular events in school to which parents are invited to take part with their children. Please see our Facebook page for an overview of what we do.

My child is going to be starting or leaving soon, how will you help them?

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

Information is gathered from parents/carers and relevant outside agencies before your child starts school.

Visits to school setting encouraged for child and parents/carers to experience school day.

Our SENCO leads transition discussions within our school and liaises with SENCO in receiving schools should a child leave our setting.

An established transition programme works well for our Year 2 children moving to the junior school. Extra visits are planned depending on needs of individual children.
